PointOne - Finding Success by Doing it Right

This has been quite a year for Catch-22 Creative client PointOne Recruiting Solutions.

The Racine-based recruiting group began 2015 by being selected the top-rated executive search firm in southeastern Wisconsin by the Milwaukee Business Journal. It will end 2015 having just been named the best place to work by the same publication.

And according to Scott Petersen, president and owner of the firm located at 8411 Corporate Drive, PointOne is just getting started.

PointOne – which specializes in banking and financial services, manufacturing and engineering, and construction – is an affiliate of MRINetwork, one of the world’s largest executive search and placement groups. PointOne ranks in the top 10 of all 600 offices in MRINetwork, which recently presented Petersen with its Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his dedication to the recruiting industry and the Racine-area community.

Since Petersen took over ownership of PointOne in 2011, the number of employees has nearly doubled, growing from 15 to the current 28. Key to that growth is the employees themselves, who through survey responses demonstrated for editors of the Business Journal that PointOne is not just a top medium-sized company to work for, but it’s the best in all of southeastern Wisconsin.

“Our business is all about
making connections.”

From the start, Petersen and his leadership team were intent on using their company to make a positive and noticeable difference in the lives of PointOne employees and everyone their work touches. One of the first orders of business in 2011 was writing that concept into the company’s mission statement: “Making the connections that change lives.”

“Our business is all about making connections,” Petersen said. “And those connections impact the lives of the nearly 30 families that make up PointOne, the lives of the people PointOne places into well-paying professional careers all over the U.S., and ultimately our clients, who benefit from the quality people we bring to them.”

But the company’s mission doesn’t end there. Petersen and PointOne employees are also committed to changing the lives of people throughout the area and actively support a variety of community programs in Racine County.

PointOne is the lead sponsor in the Racine Tri-Course golf tournament, First Tee youth golf program and Racine Kiwanis baseball. The company and its employees also make generous cash donations to a number of community-service programs, such as Cops ‘n Kids, HALO, and several veterans programs through the Wisconsin VA in Union Grove.

Other local groups benefitting from PointOne donations include Bethany Apartments, the Fresh Start Program of All Saints/Racine Unified School District, Women's Resource Center, Racine County Food Bank, Saxony Manor, Lincoln Lutheran Village, Careers, Inc., Love Inc., and Heifer International.

“Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.”
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

The charitable mission of PointOne also reaches out directly to individuals and families in need: it replaced stolen Christmas gifts for a family, covered the costs of vehicle repairs for an unemployed man, and assists many single mothers by purchasing their groceries.

“Martin Luther King, Jr. said, ‘Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness,’” Petersen said. “At PointOne, we choose to walk in the light by helping, giving back and sharing a portion of what we have been blessed with out of a spirit of thankfulness, compassion and love.”

If working for a company that is committed to community support and has been recognized among the best places to work among all businesses in the region sounds appealing, there is good news. PointOne is eager to add more professionals to its team.

“A career in recruiting isn’t usually among the top choices of new college graduates, but it is a wonderful profession,” Petersen said. “It allows you to help shape the companies which are your clients and the careers of the candidates you place. That’s all extremely rewarding.”

“The people on our team must be passionate about something in their life.”

Petersen said that the foremost qualities he looks for in new members of his team are passion and commitment, rather than education and experience.

“The people on our team must be passionate about something in their life outside of the job,” Petersen said. “And, it’s important that they demonstrate a level of dedication to it.”

In addition to having a team made up of “the right people,” Petersen says PointOne has achieved its success in a fiercely competitive industry because “we are more thorough in our sourcing and qualifying techniques than many of our competitors across the country.”

And as the inventory of qualified candidates for managerial/professional positions continues to decrease, the competition in the recruiting/placement industry will only grow more intense.

“That’s why we’re looking for smart people to add to our team,” Petersen said. “And by smart I’m talking about someone who is both ‘book smart’ and street savvy.”
